Whats around?
The Villa is well situated for travelling to some of Italy’s best destinations. Within short driving distance, is Lucca, the Viareggio beach areas, Pisa and Firenze (Florence). Then, there are beautiful hilltop towns and villages, rich with history and culture.
Pisa
While the Leaning Tower of Pisa is the most famous image of Pisa, it is one of many works of art and architecture in the city's Piazza dei Miracoli or "Square of Miracles", to the north of the old town center.
Pisa boasts more famous architectural and artistic buildings, as well as several Museums and beautiful churches. Pisa hosts the University of Pisa, especially renowned in the fields of Physics, Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science, the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and the Scuola Normale Superiore, the Italian academic élite institutions, mostly for research and the education of graduate students.
Lucca
Lucca is an ancient and medieval city, and was an important city and fortress in the 6th Century. Later, Lucca became prosperous through the silk trade that began in the 11th century, and came to rival the silks of Byzantium. During the 10-11th centuries Lucca was the capital of the feudal margravate of Tuscany.
The walls around the old town remained intact as the city expanded and modernized, unusual for cities in the region. As the walls lost their military importance, they became a pedestrian promenade which encircled the old town, although they were used for a number of years in the 20th century for racing cars. They are still fully intact today; each of the four principal sides is lined with a different tree species.
The streets inside the walls are lined with beautiful shops, including fashion stores, sunglass stores and beautiful restaurants. It makes a beautiful city to explore, and hiring a bicycle and riding around the city on the fortress walls is absolutely recommended.
Viareggio
Viareggio is a popular tourist destination with a historic fishing harbour, and is also known for its manufacture of luxury motor yachts.
The wide, endless beaches, the excellent cuisine - most notably, the seafood - and the exciting night-life with its well-known "Versilian" discos -all contribute to make Viareggio a great destination, especially as it is just 15 minutes from the Villa.
